Headshot of Paul Durand

Paul Durand

Owner & Technician

I have been a musician and technician most of my life. After closing my office technology service  company after 20 successful years, I was asked to establish and operate digital piano service for Family Piano Co.

Family Piano was a wonderful company in all ways. Unfortunately after 18 plus years in business, that included 8 years of digital piano service, they closed in early 2025.

I then founded Paul Durand Technical Services to continue bringing professional, experienced, quality and honest digital piano service and repair to customers in the Chicagoland area.

FAQ About Digital Piano Repair

Can my Yamaha Clavinova, Casio Casiotone, Roland or other electronic keyboard or digital piano be repaired?

Often, yes. As a digital piano repair expert, I handle a wide range of issues. From fixing unresponsive keys to resolving complex sound problems, I’m equipped to restore your instrument.

I’m even authorized for warranty repairs on Yamaha Clavinova, Kawai and Casio keyboards and digital pianos.

How much does it cost to repair a digital piano?

The cost of your digital piano repair depends on the specific issue and piano model. I provide transparent cost estimates after a thorough diagnostic assessment, ensuring you get affordable and reliable service.

How long will the repair take?

I strive for fast digital piano repair, and in many cases, can offer same-day service for simpler fixes. More complex issues will be handled as efficiently as possible, and I’ll keep you updated and informed with a quote and timeline.

What to do with a broken digital piano?

If your digital piano isn’t working, don’t panic; just go through these steps:

  • Check Basics: Ensure power and connections are secure.
  • Identify the Problem: Figure out what’s wrong (keys, sound, power).
  • Avoid DIY: Unless experienced, professional help is best.
  • Get a Repair Estimate: Know the cost before repairs.
  • Consider Age/Value: Is repair worth it? Ask, and I’ll be honest with you!
  • Schedule Service: For expert repairs in Chicagoland, I can help!

What is the lifespan of a digital piano?

A digital piano’s lifespan typically falls between 10 to 20 years, depending on factors like build quality, usage, and maintenance. Higher-end models and those well-maintained tend to last longer. Regular cleaning, avoiding extreme temperatures, and prompt repairs are crucial.

While technology advancements may prompt upgrades, a well-cared-for digital piano can provide years of musical enjoyment.

Do digital pianos go out of tune?

No, digital pianos do not go out of tune. Unlike acoustic pianos, which rely on physical strings that can stretch and loosen, digital pianos produce sound electronically. This means they maintain their tuning indefinitely.

However, electronic components can fail, causing sound issues, but not ‘tuning’ problems.

What can damage digital piano?

Digital pianos, while durable, are susceptible to damage from several factors:

  • Extreme Temperatures and Humidity: These can warp internal components and damage electronics.
  • Liquid Spills: Even small spills can cause significant electrical damage.
  • Physical Impacts: Dropping or hitting the piano can break keys, damage internal parts, or crack the casing.
  • Dust and Debris: Accumulation can interfere with key sensors and internal electronics.
  • Power Surges: These can fry sensitive electronic components.
  • Improper Cleaning: Using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials can damage the surface and internal parts.
